Following strong releases this year, “Together” on Positiva Records, “Travolta”, or “Set Me Free” via Size, Frenchmen Arno Cost & Norman Doray go on with another infectious disco-influenced banger named ‘Wanna Do’, joining their elite list of phenomenal productions. Providing some of the most iconic tracks of electronic music for more than 10 years, the talented duo debuts now on Club Sweat with his well-know ‘French-Touch’ inspired sound, and delivering once again a contagious groove, this time via ‘Wanna Do’. And this new collaboration is sure to cement a spot as one of the big hits of 2019.
Sidekick Music had to catch up with the duo, to know a bit more about this huge release, discuss music, and find out about what is to come from Arno Cost & Norman Doray in the next couple of months. All is below!
Hey guys, such a pleasure to have you! So, could you introduce yourselves in a few words?
We are Arno Cost & Norman Doray, two French electronic music producers and djs, and friends for more than 10 years. We’ve had solo carriers but after a small break in 2017-2018, we decided to come back as a duo and focus on making good house music!
You’ve just released your new House banger ‘Wanna Do’ on Club Sweat, catchy title! What’s the story behind it?
Thank you! We love that title as well! It all started with a vocal found in an old sounds bank a few months ago. It was so catchy we decided to build the track around it, and with such vocal, the instrumental part definitely had to be a true house one. We then found the piano gimmick, the drums and the bass and that’s it! We mainly worked through Skype sharing screen, as I am in Paris, and Norman lives in Barcelona. After a week and hundreds of tweaks, the track was done!
What’s your creative process for making music? Maybe do you have some tips to share?
No matter what kind of track we’re going to make, we always start from scratch, without any template. We prefer to give in every of our songs a unique touch, with different drums, elements and vibe.
Sometimes, I start something and send it to Norman so he can add his touch as well, sometimes it’s the other way around. We often work separately, but it happens that we are together in the studio as well. All that matters is that we have the same vision and taste for music.
We like to start with drums, a groovy loop with a nice bassline, and when we’re happy enough about it, we then build the whole track around.
If we had to give one tip, it would be : try to be different and unique, and look for your own sound. That seems easy to say, but that’s very hard, as we’re always inspired by others.
Now that you have unveiled ‘Wanna Do’, what are next months’ highlights for Arno Cost & Norman Doray, any releases ahead? Maybe touring plans?
We are focused on two things at the moment : one remix for Club Sweat that is about to be finished, and also the follow up of our song « TOGETHER » we released in early January on Positiva records. We’re very excited about these two!
We also have some solo tracks coming up for 2020 and new collabs obviously. Touring wise, we’re aiming for an Asia tour this winter and a great show in our hometown Paris on December 21st which we’re headlining.
Last but not least, what single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ? And as an attendee?
We’ve had so many amazing shows, playing mainstage for big festivals such as Tomorrowland or Creamfields, or tours in countries like USA, Australia, Brazil… it’s very hard to answer that question ! We remember amazing times in Japan, where we played for the first time back in 2010, and where we realized that people so far from our home knew and loved our music. It’s a very special feeling!
Lately, we must admit that we prefer to play for smaller crowds but more « educated », who are here to enjoy the music and dance, not to jump or take videos of the laser show the whole night!
We really had a lot of fun playing for the Club Sweat event in Amsterdam. Sick crowd, sick music, sick people. What else could we asked for? 🙂
