Interview: Discover One-To-Watch House Artist, AWKD

French DJ & House/Electronic music producer, AWKD started in 2015 as a DJ in south of France. Rapidly, many meetings with other artists make him want to make his own sounds.

While slowly growing his notoriety, his music eventually caught the attention of the label SCORPIO Music, who signed his first single Divine Love featuring with the singer Herjay. The following single “Hurricane”, first big hit in 2017, attracts the attention of other labels.

Recognized for qualitative sets (in La Dame, Le Cercle, Makila, Sunset, Darjeeling, l’Austra, Monseigneur…), his productions reached maturity when he added in 2018 English (Garage, Tech House) & US influences (The Weeknd, Drake), and reveals his urban universe through a first EP “Wild” District” including 4 tracks in House & Dance colors, influenced mainly by the sounds of artists such as Dombresky, Marc Kinchen, Chris Lake, Camelphat, Shiba San

As if nothing could stop the meteoric rise of the young AWKD, he already prepared for 2019 several singles and collaborations in prestigious labels.. and we have a first foretaste with his just-out piece ‘Summer Night’. On the occasion, we had the pleasure to meet him to discuss the track, the rest of his year 2019, and many more… All is here, enjoy !

Hey Sylvain, glad to meet you ! First, for those who don’t know AWKD, how did it all start for you ?

Hi Sidekick, thanks for having me ! My name is Sylvain aka AWKD. So everything started for me when I was 4 years old with my father who taught me how to play piano. I started to produce in 2015 for my friend Herjay who is a singer (Pop/rock music) then AWKD project naturally came into place a year later when I signed my first track on Scorpio Music records with a single called « Divine Love ft. Herjay ». Then I built my solo project whilst still producing for others artists.

You’re back a few months after the ‘Wild District’ EP with a chill-piece called ’Summer Night’. Is it important to you not to stick in just one genre ?

For me a good artist is an artist who knows how to switch from style to style whilst keeping his signature and that’s what I’m looking for. I think it is very important to create what you love before anything and I wanted to show the public my chill and deep touch through “Summer Night”. This track means a lot to me because it was inspired from a difficult period of my life and shows all the emotions that I held in during that time.

Any collaborations in progress ? Artists you’d like to work with ?

I’ve got some collaborations in working progress which I hope will be able to come out as a lot of projects never get to see the light of day.. My dream collaboration would be with Dombresky, Marc Kinchen or even Calvin Harris (ahah) but for now I love the work of GABA, we’ll see…

As a tastemaker, what do you listen to nowadays in your playlist ?

The truth is that I know Michael Jackson’s discography by heart, I had the chance to see him perform at the Stade de France in 1997 ! Otherwise I like listening to Pop/Rnb such as Majin Jordan but I feel like I always have to come back to my roots with the classics of Disclosure for exemple. But I stay before everything a fan of UK House with Sam Divine sounds or every track of Defected Records.

What can we expect for the rest of the year, do you have some exclusives to share with us ?
