Q&A : Bay City’s Magsy Shares New EP Brite Nite

In just a few months, Bay Area songwriter and synth-funk-pop aficionado Magsy has cemented his place as one of the most exciting names in pop. His previous two singles ‘Truth Is’ and ‘Noisy Mind’, have showcases an artist with a rich potential and uniquely distinctive sound.

Filled with relaxing synths, 80’s influences and a songwriting guile beyond his years – ‘Brite Nite’ is the work of an artist with a talent not to be ignored.

More than a review, Sidekick Music‘s team had the chance to have a chat with them for the occasion – to discuss the track, music, upcoming releases, and more… Enjoy!

Hey Magsy, such a pleasure to have you! So, could you introduce yourself in a few words?

Hey my name is Magsy and I make horny pop music.

How did it all start for you?

This project started when the world opened up again and people were able to go out, I couldn’t help but notice how emotional these “nights of our lives” had become. I was experiencing mixed emotions stemming from things I didn’t fully confront over the last couple of years so I thought it would be fitting to put out a high energy project I could listen to on the weekend that was centered around feelings I had a hard time talking about. That’s BRITE NITE to me.

You’ve made a great impression with the just-out EP “Brite Nite” . What’s your recipe to cook these treats? Any inspirations?

When it comes to inspiration, I was heavily inspired by the sonic identity and spirit of OMD. The music is so brite but the sentiments are introspective a lot of the time.

What’s your favorite song from the EP and why?

My favorite has got to be midnight blue for a couple reasons. First is because of the hardship I was going through at the time. I had just lost someone incredibly close to me and my girlfriend and I took a trip up the coast and it was the first time in what felt like a long time that there was hope. Second, the production has so many beautiful details and subtle changes that I’ve been able to listen on repeat for months now and still get the same feeling I did when I was first sent the bounce. Shoutout to my brother Dwilly for absolutely killing this one.

What are the five records that you can’t get enough of right now?

What does the rest of 2022 hold in store for you?

I plan on getting back to what I’ve always loved most about Los Angeles and the music industry— the live show! I also plan on dropping another EP towards the end of the year..
