The duo twocolors is full of contrasts, just like their city of Berlin, where the two musicians met in 2015 and immediately began to release music via their own, independent imprint, before signing to Virgin Records Germany/UMG in 2020.
The German two-color duo, which is successfully conquering the dance scene, has joined forces with with the French star of the genre Pascal Letoublon. The result is the dynamic single “Break Up”.
A combination of delicate strings, rousing breakdowns and emotional vocals, ‘Break Up’ is the kind of affecting dance track that leaves a lasting impression. It follows twocolors’ remix of ‘Dry Bones’ by Grammy-winning vocalist Gregory Porter. Prior to that they dropped hit singles ‘Feel It 2’, ‘Passion’ and ‘Bloodstream’, with the latter also later remixed by Belgian DJ and producer Lost Frequencies. The pair have a total of over 2 billion global streams. More than a review, Sidekick Music‘s team had the chance to have a chat with them for the occasion – to discuss the track, music, upcoming releases, and more… Enjoy!
Hey twocolors, such a pleasure to have you! So, could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hey, I am Emil. I play the guitar.
Hey, I am Pierro. I play the keys.
How did it all start for you?
Back in 2015, We met over a friend at an Italian restaurant, ate pizza, drank a lot of wine and at the end of the night we decided to work on some song ideas.
You’ve just released “Break Up” with Pascal Letoublon, catchy title! What’s the story behind it?
We wrote and produced Break Up already before Lovefool came out, so the song is already old 🙂 Pierro heard “Friendships” from Pascal on YouTube; he loved that bass sound so much. So the plan was born to do a song in that style but to combine it with our twocolors sound and add vocals and a storyline about a toxic relationship.
What’s your creative process like for making music? Are you able to share any of your secret tricks with us?
It’s always the same for us we start with a riff on the piano or guitar and then we take that to the computer, a secret that’s hard…but maybe a great song can also be played on one instrument and just vocals and if that’s already gives you a amazing vibe you are maybe on to something special.
If you could eternally be stuck in one year’s music scene, which year would it be?
What are the five records that you can’t get enough of right now?
Tame Impala “The Less I Know The Better”
Mylo “Drop the Pressure”
JAY-Z “Lucifer”
Gang Starr “Work”
Daft Punk “Around the World”
What does 2022 hold in store for you? Any clues that we could get about upcoming releases or collaborations?
Definitely more releases and much much more music and also collaborations with other artists. And after two years of pandemic we will finally play live.
Last but not least, what single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ? As an attendee?
Last year we went to Helsinki, the first country where we received a gold certificate. We went to a great party and all of us sang karaoke with our team!
