Interview: Saison Discuss New Late-Night Cut ‘Show Me’

London based House duo Saison have, over the last few years, carved out a niche of their own. Named the best Deep House artist of 2018 and 2019 by Traxource, and one of the biggest selling D-H artist on Beatport, they have released on some of the most respected house labels in the world, including Defected, Toolroom, or Large Music to name just a few. They’ve also remixed many titans of the scene including such musically diverse artists as Jack Back and Chez Damier.

With a unique sound that incorporates influences from their disparate backgrounds, Saison’s music is raw, heady and demonstrating House music at its very best. And no doubts that their latest single “Show Me” ft. Dominique Fils-Aimé is one of the best examples:

Following the release of this brand new gem, we had the opportunity to ask a few questions to the ‘Deep House maestros’; obviously about the single, but also about music, inspirations, the future, and much more…

Hey guys, thanks for your time! Let’s begin with yourself, can you tell us a bit more about Saison?

We are a deep house duo: Leigh, originally from London and Matt, originally from the States, we also run a label called No Fuss Records. We’ve been producing as Saison for around 5 years but have been producing individually for around 20 years each. We also own a studio called Earthworks, based in North London.  Saison was born from our time working at Earthworks together.

You’ve made a great impression with the just-out “Show Me”, featuring Dominique Fils-Aimé! What’s your recipe to cook these treats? Any inspirations?

The inspiration on “Show Me” came from the vocalist. We were connected with Dominique through our publisher Defected Music. She had originally written the song over another backing track and we felt it didn’t quite suite the track it was sung over. We worked on a few versions of the song before we decided on the one that you’ve heard. There is a classic timeless feel to her song and we wanted to capture that whilst keeping our sound intact. It’s been a great project for us.

Following your inspirations, any artist you would love to work with?

We have never really been ones for “producer” collaborations on our productions, maybe because we work as a team and are sharing ideas between ourselves the whole time. Working with Dominique was a particular highlight. Also through our studio and history in music we’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of artists that have inspired and influenced us over the years. Other vocalists we would love to work with include Andreya Triana, India, Dames Brown or maybeSu Su Bobian.

Leigh – We are also big music fans and we listen to all sorts of genres away from house music, on a personal note I’d love to work with LTJ Bukem.

Matt – One of my favourite bands over the past few years have been Vulfpeck, it would be great to do something with them given the opportunity.

What can we expect for the rest of the year, do you have some secret plans to share with us?

Waajeed has done a remix for “Show Me” which will be out later this year on No Fuss. He even mentioned that it has been his favourite remix to work on so, we are really excited about it. We have a few remixes coming out for Soulfuric, a classic release of theirs by Soulmagic, another one for Jalapeño Records and something for Kevin Yost. Beyond that we are really focused on our label and original productions at the moment. We have some great releases lined up with Local Options from Chicago, Massiande, Queen Rose and Wolf Story. We also have a couple more EPs in the works which we are putting the final touches on.

Quick bonus-question, what makes a good party for Saison?

Anywhere you can play music you love and connect with people!
