Disco Don LUXXURY Drops Retro-80s EP ‘Set Me Free’

Los Angeles Disco/Funk lover LUXXURY drops his new EP “Set Me Free”, or five tasty slices of dreamy 80’s-influenced bedroom pop.

Written before the world suddenly paused, his music mixes hypnotic grooves with heady mantras, optimism with pessimism, and fear with hope.

Listen 'Set Me Free' EP :

KCRW-approved opener “What Are We Gonna Do?”, a dusty funk groove mixing 70s vibes with 2020 feels, establishes the EP’s vocal minimalism: a simple repetition of the title in Robin’s fluttering falsetto turns the vocal into a mantra. “…At Any Moment”, another song about uncertainty, starts: “Things are good today, but at any moment it could change”.

‘Make it Right’ evokes Khruangbin, Toro Y Moi and Tame Impala, with more dusty beats, dreamy synths and another minimal just out of reach vocal, while ‘Our Love is Real’ is a hazy west coast funk odyssey with nods to Washed Out and The Bee Gees. And “Set Me Free”, the title track, is pure disco: a walking bassline, a melancholy chord progression, and a simple, pleading vocal mantra. The parenthetical in the title (“Song for a Person Walking Away”) evokes the image of someone – or perhaps all of us, in these weirdo times – optimistic strutting into the distance, away from ones troubles, toward a better future.

In this anxious era (and through this magnificent EP), LUXXURY seems to be trying to reassure us – and himself: “everything is gonna be alright. Right?”. So close your eyes, and enjoy the ride!
